Fitness Coaching for Me’s COVID-19 Advisory

Posted: March 16, 2020 in Uncategorized
In light of recent worldwide events, a lot of you have been asking if it is still safe to workout at the gym during this time, or what options are there in case the gym closes down. No matter what country you are in, this pandemic affects everyone almost the same way.
There’s a GOOD news, and a BAD news…
First, the BAD news:

It’s been recently found that the COVID-19 virus (like other types of viruses) can stay on a glass, metal, or plastic surface for at least 3 days, if left un-sanitized.

Glass, metal, plastic…where can they all be found in one place? The Gym!!

If you keep going to the gym, you obviously will keep touching these equipment a few dozen times during your workout, and you would have close proximity to other people working out.

But other than that, I have more GOOD news for you…

  • First, people who go to gyms tend to be healthy. And there’s a low chance that someone sick or infected would actually go to their local gym to work out.

They probably would go to a grocery store to stockpile and spend their time lining up with other panic buyers, than sweat it out in the gym!

Gym goers like us wash our hands, use hand sanitizer, wipe down equipment and make sure everything is tidy when we’re done. Compare that to someone at the grocery store who touches and inspects a dozen of canned goods or fruits before getting one.

  • Secondly, glass, metal, and other shiny surfaces are frequently wiped down on gyms because they don’t look nice when they have the tiniest smudge.

I know that the big box gym that I go to gets wiped and vacuumed at least three times a day. And now that gym owners are aware of the virus, maintenance is probably done more often.

Other than that, there are trainers and regular gym-goers who wipe down their seats, barbells and dumbbells, and everything they will touch and have touched.

  • Last but not the least, viruses are not spread by perspiration.
I know, the thought of other people perspiring on equipment, and seats, and handles, are not too appealing during this time. But there are NO scientific evidence that sweat alone can spread the virus.
There’s obviously a risk when you go to your gym.
…or when you go out to crowded places in general.

But there are ways to keep yourself and the people around you safe from this virus:
  1. Keep your immune system high.
Stay healthy and fit. Choosing to stay at home does not mean stopping all of your physical activities. Choosing to keep going to the gym means you’ll be around a healthier, fitter demographic. In any case, keep moving well and eating properly.
  2. Wash your hands.
There’s no shame in using gloves at the gym – at least use the workout gloves, not the latex ones they use in surgery unless you want to scare everybody. Even so, use the hand sanitizers frequently and wipe down equipment BEFORE and AFTER you use them.
  3. Practice social distancing.
Put your headphones on and focus on your own workout. Apart from headphones and gloves, you do not need to put on a mask. Stay at least 3 feet away from other people if you can. The most recent studies have shown that COVID-19 is not airborne, but you should keep your distance from other people to avoid any form of droplets.
  4. Stay informed.
The decision to close the gym doors or keep it open is still dependent on gym managers and owners, for now. If there is no known case in your community, your local gym would probably stay open. Things may change in a day or a few hours. Ask your gym admin or sign up to their newsletter to be kept up to date.
The best thing you can do is to stay healthy and fit, and keep your immune system high. Go out for a (solo) run. Eat nutritious food rich in Vitamin B and C.
Keep working out and lift weights at home.
